TOMKA AND HIS FRIENDS | Alamo Drafthouse Cinema

NYC friends 🙂 Tomorrow, September 22nd do not miss the NY THEATRICAL PREMIERE of beloved classic TOMKA AND HIS FRIENDS. Xhanfise Keko is the only female director in the history of communist Albanian cinema, establishing herself as one of the top directors in Albania’s male-dominated film industry. This restoration is the first chance to look at moving images from a society that was closed off from the rest of the world for decades.
*The Alamo Drafthouse will donate 50% of ticket sales to the ongoing preservation work of ACP. ** To learn more about this restoration and the work of ACP: http://www.thealbaniancinemaproject.org/tomka-dhe-shokeumlt-e-tij.html

CINEUROPA – Albania sends Chromium to the Oscar

Albania sends Chromium to the Oscars

Bujar Alimani’s feature-length drama has been submitted by Albania to represent the country in the Best Foreign-language Film category

Chromium, directed by Albanian filmmaker Bujar Alimani, will compete for the Best Foreign-language Film Award at the upcoming 89th edition of the Academy Awards. Alimani is also known for Ygraerio (2006) and his debut feature, Amnesty [+], which earned him the Cineuropa Award at the Lecce Film Festival in 2011. A far cry from the tender love story portrayed in Amnesty, he now brings us a sensitive story of a 15-year-old boy’s search for independence in a dysfunctional family.

In Chromium, Fredjon Ruci plays Adi, a quiet, rebellious boy living with his younger brother and deaf-mute mother. His desire to find some independence and money lands him a job working illegally in a chromium mine. That decision will have profound consequences for his entire family, and he will only find identification and trust in a young female teacher, Mirela Naska.

The feature is a co-production between Albania, Kosovo, Germany and Greece, and its producers are 90 Production, Gegnia Film, Tefta Bejko, Valon Jakupaj, Anita Elsani, Thanos Anastopoulos and Stella Theodorakis. It had its world premiere in 2015 at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where it played in the East of West sidebar, and later screened at the Hamburg International Film Festival. It was released after this in Albania.

In 2011, Alimani’s Amnesty was submitted in the Best Foreign-language Film category but failed to make the final shortlist. This will be his second attempt and the tenth by Albania, as the country has submitted films in this category nine times since 1996. However, the nation has never been nominated in the January shortlist, so perhaps now could be the time for Albania and for Chromium.

The Albanian Cinema Project – Archives in Motion Workshops

Friends and film lovers everywhere:) Please take few minutes and consider for yourselves why the work of The Albanian Cinema Project it’s so important worldwide. Help us raise the funds needed to bring a film scanner to Albania for our fantastic Archives in Motion Workshops this October. Only a month left to meet our goals and you can join us as so many key organisations like International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF), Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation, NYU Cinema Studies / Orphan Film Symposium, etc. have done! And, here’s actress Eliza Dushku with her brother Nate, sharing their experience in the land of the eagles @elizadushku #DearAlbaniahttp://www.thealbaniancinemaproject.org/archives-in-motion.…

Building on our successful foundation and proven track record in Albania, ACP is launching regional training workshops in the Western Balkans for archives professionals. These archivists are working against the odds to preserve an endangered cinematic heritage that has been far too little seen beyond the region’s borders. ACP will organize and host  a 2-week intensive preservation institute at the Albanian National Film Archives (AQSHF)  and the Marubi Academy of Film and Multimedia in Tirana, Albania from October 17-28, 2016. This will be the first in a series of ongoing workshops in the region. AIM will be organized under the auspices of ACP and their partners in Albania and the Western Balkan Region. AIM is a capacity building project to promote and carry out film and video preservation and digitization and to facilitate access to the archival and contemporary cinema of the Western Balkans in situ.

The AIM Workshops will feature intermediate and advanced courses with a focus on practical training in current audiovisual preservation and restoration techniques and archival practices conducted by leading archivists and restorers from preeminent international institutions: the Magyar Filmlabor (Hungarian Film Lab), A/V Geeks (North Carolina, USA), AV Preservation (Switzerland), The George Eastman Museum (GEM, Rochester, NY, USA), NYU MIAP (NY, USA), The Imperial War Museum (IWM, London,UK), the San Francisco Media Archive, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM, Washington, DC), Indiana University Libraries (Bloomington, IN, USA), and the Wende Museum (Los Angeles, CA).

AIM is designed to bring equipment and professional expertise in film and video preservation and digitization to countries with a rich audiovisual heritage, but where, due to decades of infrastructural challenges, access to the tools for ongoing preservation and restoration have been limited. We are committed to fostering collaboration and increasing preservation initiatives by bringing the latest technologies to the region, along with the necessary training for the archives and archivists, so they can begin to provide digital access to their own materials. Help us achieve these goals by contributing to our crowdfunding campaign for a scanner today!
